años. ¿Qué relación tenía con ellos?, y
de todo lo que ha aprendido de ellos,
¿qué es lo que más recuerda?
He tenido la suerte de convivir
muy de cerca con la Reina Federica
y con los Condes de Barcelona, lo
que me ha permitido disfrutar de
mis abuelos en el sentido más am-
plio de la palabra, en casa, de vaca-
ciones, en viajes…
Y además he podido aprender sus
lecciones esenciales: optimismo para
vencer las dificultades, sentido del
deber y experiencia y comprensión de
las personas y los acontecimientos,
que me han ayudado mucho a lo largo
de mi vida.
Sus padres son también abuelos. ¿Es-
tá inculcando a sus hijos lo importante
que es para el desarrollo personal, esta
relación entrañable que se establece
entre abuelos y nietos?
Los Reyes son unos magníficos
abuelos, basta verlos cuando están
con sus nietos como disfrutan unos y
otros. Mis hijos viven encantados esta
relación de forma natural y espontá-
nea al igual que con sus otros abue-
los. La forma natural de cariño y res-
peto que tengo en la relación con
ellos. Y es absolutamente maravilloso
lo que disfrutan mis padres enseñan-
do a mis hijos y cómo se ilusionan, en
este momento sobre todo, mi hijo ma-
yor con las nuevas cosas que le ense-
ñan sus abuelos. De esta relación no
puedo sino dar gracias a Dios por lo
que pueden disfrutar, con sus abuelos
como yo disfrute con los míos.

Being Goodwill Ambassador
to this II World Assembly on Ageing is
an excellent opportunity to get to
know about the Spanish experience
B orn in Madrid on the 13th of July
1965, H.R.H. Cristina Federica de
Borbón y Grecia is the second
daughter of HM the King and Queen of
Spain, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía.
She is fifth in line of succession to the
Crown, after the Prince of Asturias,
Princess Elena, Felipe Juan Froilán de
Todos los Santos and Victoria Federica.
She studied Political Science at the
Universidad Complutense in Madrid and
did a master in International Relations
at New York University in 1990. She
worked for a year at the UNESCO
headquarters in Paris, the organisation
for which she holds the position of
President of Honour of the Spanish
Commission. She has participated in
different projects, particularly concerned
with education and the protection of
cultural and artistic heritage.
Princess Cristina supports different
care organisations. For seven years she
has presided over the IMSERSO Awards;
she is President of the International
Foundation of Sailing for the Disabled,
and she was a member of the Spanish
Olympic sailing team at the 1988 Seoul
Olympics.
She is presently working in the
International Co-operation Department
of the La Caixa Foundation in Barcelona,
the city where she lives with her
husband, Iñaki Urdangarín, an ex-
handball player for Barcelona FC and the
Spanish team. She is the mother of two
children, Juan Valentín de Todos los
Santos, who was born on the 29th of
September 1999, and Pablo Nicolás,
born on the 6th of December 2000, and
she will give birth to a third child in
2002.
Your Highness has been named
United Nations Goodwill Ambassador
for the II World Assembly on Ageing
that is going to take place in Madrid in
the coming month of April. What
exactly are the functions in this
position?
Helping to encourage interest in our
society towards the challenges that
population ageing raises all over the
world, and promoting support to the
Assembly that is going to tackle these
issues.
Why have you accepted this post, and
what do you hope to contribute from
your life experience?
Being Goodwill ambassador to this
World Assembly on Ageing is an honour
that I am deeply grateful to the United
